Nick Bianco finds himself apprehended during a failed jewelry heist. Despite the prosecution's offer of a reduced sentence in exchange for implicating his partners in crime, he staunchly refuses to betray them. However, as he serves his prison sentence, a significant event occurs that prompts him to reconsider his stance.

One of the great film noirs & though Widmark steals the picture in one of the most memorable debuts in Hollywood history, the entire cast does splendid work with Mature giving one of his best performances. Coleen Grey had 2 of her best film roles the year this came out (1947) here & in NIGHTMARE ALLEY. A really appealing actress who deserved better parts than were her lot generally thereafter.
This proved to be a banner year for film noir with pictures like these & OUT OF THE PAST.

Fabulous. What a great story with understated acting from Victor Mature and his charming family. Brian Donlevy excellent as always and Richard Widmark debut as the crazy rat. Great stuff.

3 of my favorite actors: Brian Donlevy V.Mature and R.Windmark! It's my favorite Richard Windmark's performance ever! Just the scene around 52:14 is enough to be my favorite! He had the same enthusiasm, on O. Henry's Full House, which is a movie, with a huge cast, full of first class calliber actors, like Sir Charles Laughton, Merilyn Monroe, Anne Baxter and many more!
