Baby Robins! From Eggs to Fledge and Beyond - Get a Look In The Nest

A robin's nest was discovered. We put the camera up, not sure if it was an old nest or if the robins were taking a honeymoon. "Honeymoons" are common with some birds - this is a time between nest construction and egg laying.

The camera detected the first egg on 4/15/22. We got footage of incubation, feeding and care. Fledge day was 5/15/22. So excluding the nest building period (which we do not have), the whole process took a month.

Robins usually lay one egg a day. In this video, there was a day of no laying before she laid her next egg. Once all the eggs are laid, she will start to incubate so the eggs hatch on or close to the same day.

Only the female incubates the eggs. The female robin develops a brood patch, which is a bald spot on her breast that allows her to transfer heat to her eggs and nestlings as well as detect egg temperature and signal to her how attentive she needs to be.

Once eggs hatch, robins will leave the nest anywhere between 13-16 days old.

It was beautiful watching this and seeing how attentive her mate was. The devotion of both parents contributed to the success of this entire nest.

In fact, it is truly amazing all three nestlings survived. Nests are so susceptible to predation.

Not only did all three fledge, but we saw all three a month later at the bird bath.

We hope you enjoyed this footage.

Beautiful video! My youngest keeps his casement window open during the Summer mos (2nd floor) & a Robin built her nest in there! He has a window fan propped in front of the screen & didn't notice til she built it (it's off now, as he's away this wk). I thought it best to leave well enuf alone, & let nature take its course (then, remove the nest once they've grown & moved on).. & not leave the window open so wide from that point forward. 1 of 3 hatched yesterday afternoon, & i suspect the 2nd one did in the evening. I've not been back to look after the 1st one, but did put a table fan on his floor last nite, about 10' or more away, on low, bcuz it was SO hot yesterday. Ist hatchling was moving when i checked on him, when parent was away fr nest for a tiny bit. Praying they will all be okay. 🙏❤🐣

Incredible video. Robins always remind me of March, as spring breaks through the tough winter. Sometimes around end up of May through June, we have young fledglings stay in our yard until they feel ready to set out to other areas.

Just ran across a nest ( July 4th) Its very low to ground ?! It already has four eggs!!!! It's right on a bush I was going to trim on the fence! That's how low to the ground she is with her babies! Geezo So many other big high trees she could have picked ?! I won't be able to use my gate for about a month now at least!!!! Lol-🐦 🪺🪺🪺🪺

such a clean, gets rid of poop 2:00 most of the time they will carry it far away, drop it' from the nest to keep predators away, clean to.
Throw some crochet yarn out there for them in the spring to build a nest, they like that.
