I have a BA in Environmental Studies. I took some basic science courses but not all. Not saying I’ll give up, but what happens if you don’t pass the class? Do they allow you to retake the course? Do you have to pick a whole new career path or do they reassign you themselves?

I'm planning on joining the Navy through OCS. I'm presently studying Marine Environment and Pollution Control in a Maritime University.
First of, I hope my course of study wouldn't hinder me?
Second, I heard something about being in the squadron Navy and being attached to the ship. Does my course of study dictate where I'd be? Can I be attached to a ship even as an environmental scientist?
How's the rising in rank going to be for me?
