Slack & Flickr were features from a failed video game

It’s post dot-com bubble and Stewart Butterfield is building a multiplayer online game called Game Neverending.

Running out of cash & time, he builds out the photo-sharing feature from the game and called it Flickr.

#flickr was the #instagram of it’s time and in 2005, Flickr was acquired by Yahoo.

After fully-vesting at #yahoo, Stewart Butterfield goes back to building the game. This time calling it Glitch.

Realizing the chat feature they’ve built could be bigger than the game, Stewart pivots the company to create Slack: the messaging app for teams.

Slack found it’s first users from early adopters that worked at startups. And in 2021 Slack was acquired by #salesforce for $27.7B.
