An idea I came across is to not give feedback on what to do. Give a detailed description of your reaction to the work you look at. If you look at a picture you say what you see and what that seems tell you and how that makes you feel. This is a very useful way to structure feedback if you are not far more advanced and part if the creative process at hand. The value of this is that the creator can mould the object to illicit a desired response and often they are the ones most qualified to choose how that would be done.

In many other cases this just doesn’t work, for instance in the case if a teacher and student, as the point of the feedback might be to guide specific action. But I still feel it useful to always compartmentalise reaction and proposed action.

I studied psychology at a university and we had to give our fellow students feedback after their presentations. Our prof handed out feedback guidelines to do that properly. Those guidelines totally boiled down to what you say in this video 😊 So there you have it: Your advice is scientifically approved. 😉
