MIT Is Crowdsourcing Moral Decision Making For Self-Driving Cars

As more and more companies experiment with self-driving cars, new questions arise about how the vehicles should respond in certain situations. If someone runs into the middle of the street, should it swerve and kill the driver or keep going and kill the pedestrian? These are some difficult moral dilemmas, and so researchers at MIT have created a website called "Moral Machine" to let humans decide what the cars should do in various scenarios.

the computer/ai can calculate the distance to the obstacle and do it can probably calculate the force of impact after the breaking, if the force is to great for the obstacle (human in this case) to survive, steer into teh car in this case, minimizing the damage, this is my initial thought

Actually it's not a feature of the trolley dilemma. It's a fundamental tenet of utilitarianism (the prisoner dilemma. First year university graduates stuff... Moreover, I believe the ethical epistemology is even older being an extraction from the Nicomachean Ethics

Drive slow and shit before you go out the door so you won't be speeding half way home. There's your MIT answer. No kills. No accidents. And make sure you don't drive a truck because you eventually become a douchbag later on in life.

So I was thinking...

Wouldn’t it be simple to have a jet propulsion system which in case of the emergencies would activate and stop the car with the applied thrust in the opposite direction?

True, it will be costly, but does the cost matter the choice between which lives are going to be sacrificed? It’s 100% the fact that car companies will make cars which will protect their owners, otherwise the car which sacrifices the owner would not be needed on the market

that's why we shouldn't make smart cars fast.
