Today's ONE-MINUTE ENGLISH video was inspired by an online falling-out I had recently with a guy I used to know . . . . who's managed to turn themselves into a person I no longer know.

This is a short video explaining to English language students how to use the common collocation / expression / phrase A LOST CAUSE. We aim to show students how to learn English fast – and provide an easy way to learn English. This video is designed for Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced students learning English as a foreign language and is part of a series that looks at everyday English and common words, chunks, idioms, phrasal verbs, phrases and expressions used in spoken English - and British English in particular. It includes a story, an explanation of the common idiom and some examples which will help EFL and ESOL students understand and use the lexical item. It's suitable for students studying for the IELTS, Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), Cambridge Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge Proficiency (CPE) exams. It will also help anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of English idioms, English vocabulary and English grammar. CELTA- and DELTA-qualified English teachers may also find it helpful, especially teachers who use a lexical approach.

Thank you for this video, Hugh.

My manager reads manga and sleeps during working hours. I told him that you might lose a job in the future. If you keep doing this, You can't find a new job. However he never try to change. It's a lost cause.

Thanks a million! In 2018, I thought my SAP BW career was a lost cause and I needed to choose another programming language or platform, but one call changed my life to better...

Hi Hugh, my examples: 1) I tried to get my brother into a healthy lifestyle, but he's never done any of the exercises that I have taught him or go on a healthy diet that i have devised for him. He's a LOST CAUSE. 2) On social media, I've only unfriended a person I know. He was so extremist in his views, and overreacted to any comment I made. He's a LOST CAUSE. By the way, is this expression similar to A HOPELESS CASE?
