Star Trek: Insurrection - The Odd Numbered Curse Strikes Again?

Star Trek: Insurrection is considered by many to be little more than a glorified episode of Star Trek - The Next Generation. How did it happen? In 1996, Star Trek First Contact proved to be a sizeable hit for Paramount Pictures, with the action-packed addition to the franchise grossing a strong 92 million domestically, and another 54 million abroad. Certainly, the franchise was set to continue, but as everyone who knows Trek is aware of, there’s a perceived curse on all the odd numbered films in the series, and with this one being number nine, would Insurrection be the movie to break the pattern once and for all?

Nope. Not at all, and in this episode of Revisited we look into why the movie fell so flat with friends.

Maybe it's because I grew up with this movie but its one of my favorites. People complain that it just feels like an episode of the show, but to me that's exactly what a Star Trek movie should be

This is a great Star Trek film. I always get a tear in my eye at the end when the Sona reunites with his family.

I like this movie. I saw it in the theater and I liked it then. It’s a good movie. The franchise needed to slow down and take a breather after First Contact. It does feel like an episode of TNG and that’s what I like about it

I really enjoyed this movie. I never thought of it as a TNG episode but in fact, that is actually what Star Trek is all about. It is NOT Star Wars where everything has to be resolved with a huge space battle. It is Star Trek. Enough said.

I loved all the STNG movies. I was 7 when the show started so growing up with STNG was awesome. I will still rewatch the series and movies every now and again. There was just something magical about it to me, and the chemistry with the cast was amazing. Got to meet Marina Sirtis about 10 years ago - she was delightful af 😁.

Legend has it that Patrick Stewart was so displeased with the first draft of the script he wrote a lengthy letter to the writer saying how disappointed he was and that he knew they could do better.

Considering what was going on with Deep Space nine, a Dominion War movie with the Enterprise crew would've been an epic.

I really like this movie. It’s not universe ending threats, but about a village much like what id imagine a regular day-to-day in Star Fleet would be. Music was fantastic and it was nice watch.

Jonathan Frames is a perfect ensemble director. Each character gets some spotlight. That's why I think he would be good choice for a Justice League movie.

When I saw this on the big screen. I thought, in the beginning I was watching an episode on the small screen. But overall, I still loved it. Great narrative voice, Mr Humphrey. Big fan from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹. I'm a subscriber to your channel.

I think the lesson here is, never put 'Right of Refusal On Scripts' into your actors contracts...

I didn't mind Star Trek insurrection. The chase through the field was cool as was the crew's reaction to their new youthful. But, it just felt like a two-part episode

Like "The Final Frontier", this just feels like a homage to the TV-Series it follows. "Insurrection" really feels like an extended Episode of TNG, matching its tone to a T... which is not a bad thing, mind you. It doesn't reach the hights of "First Contact" but its still a *nice*, lighthearted tale, an effortless watch.

I'm in the minority here but I really enjoyed this one. No, it's not as good as First Contact but I thought it was well shot and I didn't mind the not so great CGI effects back then.

When I think of this movie I think of outdoor phaser fights and dives.

The aliens in this look like they've had disastrous facelifts or liposuction leaving them looking like crumpled paper bags.

The perfect critique for this film is that it feels like a TV show. The story isn't bad. The effects are serviceable. The acting draws you in without wowing you. So, overall it works and it's fun. But it's not what you would expect on the big screen, it's just about what you'd expect on the TV once a week.

I love Insurrection, I think it's fun, funny, well-paced, and gives most of the main cast some killer lines. The end is pretty happy, I'll admit it's light-hearted fare but at worst - it's inoffensive. At best, I think it's underrated.
