Haunting music. For some strange reason, I can't get this song out of my head even though I haven't heard it for 40 years.

This song and so many others... Oh how I wish I could go back into time.

This was "morning music" when I was stationed in Norfolk in the mid-70's.  I think we wore out 3 copies of the album.  Blankets for curtains on the windows, boards on the cinder blocks for shelves, and a $9000 stereo we picked up for peanuts in Japan a few years prior.  Good times.

Still hearing those chimes, they have been marking time since I first heard this magnificent song 47 years ago and its true import became clear to me. And I'll be hearing them for the remainder of my finite time in this materialistic realm. Changing times of fortunes past, I will be free at last - as we all shall be. Politics, money and religion are inconsequential. I am the intangible captain of my corporeal ship, and I am ultimately homeward bound, to an ethereal port free of the constraints of time and space. This is my song.

Maybe time travel is possible! I just returned to 1973 and being 16 years old, listening to Doobies in our VW van at the beach in San Diego. These guys were my favorite band for years as a teen. Hard to believe it was 43 years ago...Still sounds great

Listened to this enough times down the years and it's still as good as it ever was.

I was just out mowing the lawn and thought of this and NEEDED to hear it for just an energy to finish. Always loved the Doobie Brothers. Saw them at Cynthia Woods Pavilion in the Houston area a couple of years ago. Loved seeing Pat Simmons and of course Johnston and McFee. They didn't disappoint. Would have been a really great surprise to see Jeff Baxter with them, but oh well.

One of my favorite albums by the group. It's interesting when listening now as I can hear how the mix was approached with the "quad" mix in mind. Having owned the quad 8-track I can relate back to the choices in reverb and panning for the quad mix and how those choices affected the stereo mix. This album and Stampede sound great in quad - and mighty fine in stereo I might add.

I am realizing more and more that the Best of the Doobies album excludes a lot of great songs!

What a great album. This line up was the precursor to the "Taking it the streets' album which is a masterpiece.
The missing link was Mike McDonold. Any line up with Simmons, Johnson and Baxter on guitar with McDonald on keys and vocals was a win win situation.
This album was what it was due to
Jeff Baxter
He gave this band the much needed edge. McDonald gave it a further boost on the next album.
There are several classic cuts on this disc. And not the ones that got air play. It was as though they were tuning up for there next beast.
Listen to the harmony on 'The captain and me.
Not just vocals, but also guitar.
