GM should make a simple EV swap kit for older GM vehicles. Something that would bolt into many SBC powered vehicles and could easily be adapted into other makes as well.
One battery cell in place of the fuel tank and another in place of the engine. With the electric motor in place of the transmission. Still using a driveshaft to the rear axle and adaptable to the original transfer case for four wheel drive GM vehicles. Could still have regeneration braking all built into the electric motor to work on deceleration when activated by a simple switch. 
Nothing tied into the original brakes, suspension, or steering. No giant touchscreen on the dash. Just a small display with a couple buttons that could mount anywhere to monitor the system status.
I would convert my '70 Nova to electric if GM made such a kit and it was within my budget...
