Two problems here, One :she’s not paying attention, two: no cone zone at all. It will ultimately fall on the construction workers failure to create a proper construction zone.

Beware of your surroundings don't look at your phone while walking or blast music into your ears

Why the héll didn’t they tape off or block around the perimeter? That’s a safety violation.

She may not have been looking but I believe there should have been a Flagman posted to warn away any pedestrians or vehicles. Complete tragedy, however, and an unnecessary loss of a precious life!

The truck looks empty, doesn't even look like its going to move. She stopped to see if cars were coming, doesn't look like she expected the truck to move at all.

She was walking in a crowded city full of cars, and shes crossing a road, yet she did not bother to look around at all for almost 10 seconds.

Let this be a warning. Get your face out of your phone when out and about.

Oh no. Man. That did not have to happen. I automatically put my damn phone down and look both ways and in front when I'm crossing the street.

Where’s the Flagger for this construction site? That is a major violation of backing out without a spotter, you have to make sure nobody is behind you.

This is completely preventable. I feel so sorry for all parties involved. The woman died unnecessarily, and my heart goes out to her family. The heavy equipment operator must be devastated, an accident of this magnitude is tragic. Just plain terrible, on every level.

The Full Fault is on the construction company. No safety cones, no proper signage, no guide construction worker directing traffic, no policeman directing traffic, and no warning bells when the backhoe was reversing. The construction company had numerous chances to avoid this tragedy. Prayers and blessings to the family, absolutely sad way to die.

We lost our eye's sight to our phone.

Ol' boy didn't look behind him when backing into a whole ACTIVE street?? You put more care into backing out a sedan than he did that backhoe.

Sad story. Was she on her phone? We can't expect that everyone is going to be looking out for us, so we have to actually pay attention, especially when doing something like crossing a street.

R.I.P.

Let's face the reality here... she could have been a blind person... just like she was on her phone... but it what it boils down too... she was a pedestrian... she may have also been experiencing deafness... she might have been under medication... she was still a pedestrian

Having a ground man as a spotter is California law, especially when you are interacting with the public.

I’m pretty sure backhoes are supposed to make a loud noise when reversing.
