In case people don't know, here a little trivia. The reason pirates, and sailors in general, used to wear eye patches is because of the need to go above and below deck. During the day, the sky is bright and the eyes would adjusted for that. If you then go below deck you pretty much blind for a time. The remedy was to cover one eye while on deck, and when going below move the cover to the other eye which was ready for a dark environment so you could see. Switch the cover over the eye as necessary when going up and down.
