He acts as if strategically fleeing in certain situations, or on a regular basis is a sign of weakness or failure. Why stay and fight if your position is lost or are expecting mass casualties if the battle continues? He was good at keeping the morale of troops high. And the best way to keep morale high is by saving the lives of your comrades.

The British could have killed Washington when he was retreating on a couple of occasions but he was admired and seen as a Brit so they didn’t fire and allowed him to escape.
History could have been a lot different.
