What is literacy?

Faculty in the College of Education at Illinois State University shared their knowledge about literacy learning and teaching by responding to a series of questions on a range of important topics.

Try this, Literacy is the ability to do our biologically defined job as a life support system of our body.
Our biologically defined job, as Plato pointed out, is predictive behavior, i.e., the ability to manage our behavior in relation to the behavior of the environment
As Plato also pointed out, all systems of correct grammar are dialectical, or what the computer shows us today, afforded by binary recursion.
Binary recursion affords us two types of identity, each type commensurate with one element of our binary. Arithmetic, called also, literal identity, and Geometric also called proportional or metaphorical identity.
Binary affords us four specific categories of grammar forming a complete Grammar Matrix, each founded on one of the four methods of effecting binary recursion. These are traditionally named; Common Grammar, Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry.
Elementary Grammar focuses on learning how to say what you see, i.e., putting a one to one correspondence between the perceptible and the intelligible.
