I always imagined it similar to the way Sasuke's rinnegan ability works. You just switch places with a nearby object. Which is why when his rinnegan ability was revealed I felt like it was dumb because we already had the substitution jutsu.

They could've spammed it against everyone. No chakra cost either, it's dumb

They COULD just dodge, but they do this technique to flex

What’s really funny is that even in the Naruto games this jutsu was just unbalanced, particularly in ultimate ninja on ps2 or clash of ninja where you could just spam it. It wasn’t until storm generations where the jutsu felt balanced 🤣

I have always looked at substitute jitzu as preparing them well in advance, for instance if you know you will be going on a mission you make 2 or 3 before hand ( I say 2 or 3 because it may need lots of chakra to maintain ) and then you just follow behind, when in combat it gives you a chance to study your exponents u till you have run out of them then you can use your real body .. but that's how I see it no evidence from the manga to back it up, but it does make sence, because you would have known before hand.. please explore this theory

I think they use their charkra to summon the object to their location and then body flicker to the object location at the same time . This make some sense

i dont know why but i used to think that some how he fuses his chakra with like the object and it is able to exchange locations

some characters use transformation on a log and not substitution, example Sasuke vs temari

I think it is a type of jutsu rather than a single jutsu. Any jutsu that switch place can count as substitution. As for the log thing it could be a form of kuchiyose, u may need to prepare special log and kuchiyose requires much chakra. Since it is a simpler form of kuchiyose its range quite short and chakra burst may give away location if you are against jonin.
