Description
In some parts of India, to this day, educated men come at a price, literally. Knowing
their material worth, families of these men demand exorbitant dowries from the families of the
bride they intend to marry. So what happens when it’s impossible for the poor families to come
up with this money? Pakadwa shaadi - a rotten custom where grooms are kidnapped and
forced to marry women belonging to these poor households, often at gunpoint. But what
happens to the woman who isn’t accepted by her husband or her family?
Gehna lives in one such village in eastern UP called Khapuriya. She is jugaadu, upbeat and in
every sense of the term, she’s a “kisaan ki beti”. Her love for farming is pure and unwavering, a
love instilled in her by her father Ramlal. Kajri was born with Asthma and to treat her, his father
gave up everything he had, including his farm. One day a row ensued and Ramlal had to flee
the village to avoid being falsely accused for murder. Gehna has thus grown up feeling like a
“bojh” especially since her grandmother never lets her forget everything she cost the family.
Gehna now has but one aspiration in life - to get the farm back from Shakti Singh before her
father returns, a promise she made when he was leaving. She has sworn never to be a “bojh”
on anyone else. Little does she know that the evil custom of Pakadwa vivaah might make her a
burden forever. When the show begins, both Gehna and her mother work as labours on the very
farm that used to be theirs. While she struggles everyday to make some money and get a loan
from the local bank, her efforts are in vain. It seems like she will have to accept Shakti Singh’s
foul offer - to marry him and get back her father’s farm. Enter Dr. Ayushman Raisingh. Young, educated, a perfectionist, he’s come from Banaras to their village for his rural stint as a doctor. There’s a deep-seated hatred in him for all regressive village customs, the illiteracy, the superstition. But he's good at his profession and has a gentle heart, something that makes Gehna start liking him when he treats her mother. When Gehna’s mother sees Gehna with Ayushmaan, and afraid that Gehna will ruin her life by marrying Shakti Singh, she decides to take matters into her own hands and gets the local goon Bhola’s help. Bhola plans Ayush’s pakadwa with Gehna, something she has no clue about.
