Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong joins us this week for his 2nd appearance on the Fozcast and in this clip, he talks about the time that Libya trapped the Nigeria team in an airport which led to the game being cancelled and Nigeria being awarded the 3-0 win. Locked in the airport with no food, no wifi, no team bus… the list goes on! This one is a must watch!

This is one of the things that's holding African football back.😢 It happens at club level as well. The game is beyond corrupted and I don't see any chance of change. 💔

There was another reason why the Tunisian pilot was sweating.
This situation could have been even worse.
One thing that was not widely reported was how dangerous the last minute diversion ordered by the highest 'political' authority really was, as the plane was descending into Benghazi.

The Tunisian pilot pleaded with the Libyan ATC, 8 times explaining how low on fuel the plane was. But was told they must not land in Benghazi under any circumstances and directed them
to the Al Abraq airstrip, which was not even the alternate airport in the pilots flight plan.

If not for the skill of the pilot, who explained he only had enough fuel for 1 pass and no landing lights at this airport, I think we all realise how chilling the headlines of that awful day could have been.

Lastly the pilot also explained that he had flown to that airport once before and this prior experience, most likely saved them, as there was no landing lights.

We so proud having him as our captain! Big up your damn self, Troost. Hopefully we nick it in Morocco 🙏🏿

This would be enough to have a nation banned from hosting international football anywhere else, and probably a one year suspension from all international football in UEFA and it should be the same for Libya. In my opinion CAF didn’t go far enough with a fine and awarding the win to Nigeria, completely unacceptable behaviour from an absolute shambles of a country.

Libya is a country with a troubling history of racial discrimination and the practice of slavery, which still persists today. Kudos to the Nigerians for refusing to tolerate their blatant provocations designed to cause frustration. Much respect to William Troost-Ekong for stepping up as a true captain by prioritizing the safety of his team and ensuring the reality of the situation in that country is brought to light. He made the right call in deciding not to proceed with the match, especially after learning about what Benin experienced in Libya. His leadership is truly commendable.🙌

In the old days, countries would get at least a 2 year ban for stuff like this. Nigeria as African champions missed the 1996 African Championships due to a ban for boycotting games. Its shocking that CAF only gave Libya a fine. They should have got a 4 year ban.

You could write a book about these type of thing in Africam football. Totally embarassing and counterproductive.

It's interesting hearing the details in which Nigeria and Benin's national teams were hosted, considering that Libya was slated to host the AFCON back in 2013 but ultimately withdraw due to the effects of the Arab Spring and NATO's contribution in toppling Gaddafi's regime.

That’s some story that. Surprise it was only a 50k fine for basically kidnapping a whole national team

This is unheard of. This is rather unfortunate

There you have the full story…. when you see these African Countries at the WC, you know the players play to represent and express something higher than just 11 onfield guys chasing a round leather object to kick about ‼️

It was coach Bill Shankley- that said football is more important than life and death - football can be an expression for ideals!!
