Goodbye perpetual licenses. The day they stop offering those, the day I no longer buy their product.

I cancelled my Adobe subscription because there are other open source packages out and available which meet my needs without costing thousands of dollars a year. I will never subscribe to any software except on-line games. The only reason software companies continue to have subscription based software is because people subscribe. When people finally get tired of paying out the nose for such programs, the subscription fees may become more reasonable, or the software companies will die.
The problem with industry standard type software is, big companies use it, and get their customers to pay for it through the products they sell. So big companies have padded bank accounts which can afford the high subscription prices. I think the idea is to eliminate the individual creator sector, so only big companies have the subscription based software.

They're saying that nothing will change "for now", because it definitely will change :D. They're going to go subscription only after a few months. Adobe is not known for being an innovative company, whereas Allegorithmic has had a tremendous impact on the 3d industry. Get ready for minimal updates, because Adobe will need to get a return on their investment.

R.I.P. Monthly subscription incoming, I can already sense it.

Things Can go one of 2 ways 1. allegorithmic will be left more or less alone and adobe will try and integrate some of their 3D tech into there publishing apps Photoshop/illustrator or maybe get them to create some new 3D apps ...

or they will completely take over allegorithmic and force their software into creative cloud and change development strategy to align with their overall company strategy which lets face it is more about 2D publishing than film vfx production/games.

I felt like my best friend has been shot in the head in front of me. This made me really sad and angry that i can even write a substance painter from scratch rather than giving money to adobe i'm that pissed right now!..

I knew it allegorythmic are just a bunch of cheap opportunists and now their product will now die with adobe! They were afraid of blender and that's why they sold it before it was too late! RIP Allegorythmic! Blender and 3d coat will fill the void!

As an indie perpetual licenses are key to protect my work. To have my assets locked behind an Adobe rental paywall is unacceptable. I've spent years building SD assets for my work. I neither want nor need anything Adobe has to offer. So i could care less about this 'exciting opportunity'. I'm in damage limitation mode now.

Let's hope Armorpaint can live up to its potential and we can all have a suitable substitute for Substance.

This is probably bye bye substance, no way i`m paying a monthly sub, bought the program a few months back with one year of updates, as long as it stills runs without updates I will continue to use it but if it gets disabled it be uninstalled and start learning texture paint in Blender. Adobe are just going to price gouge people for this tool

3D coat can be a solution if Substance goes wrong, i love substance painter and designer, but 3D coat is like a cross between Zbrush and Substance, a friend of me talk me about those software long long time ago, and he told me that the retopology en modeling are realy good and now they do PBR.

This is bad news from my point of view. I bought substance painter from steam few months ago. I thought it offered 1 year update, 30 downloads from substance source per month ( I later found out that steam purchases aren't eligible for substance source access) and perpetual use after 1 year. But, now I am confused about the future of the software.

Hey everyone,

I never used Substance Designer & Painter but was considering using it for future projects. Can I create textures now and use the textures later without Substance or it always required to use substance painter to use the texture files?

I have a question for anyone who might know. I have a perpetual license for all my Substance Products, if I hold my current version and license, can Adobe get in the way of me doing my work with Substance?

I'm not planning on renewing my maintenance contract, due to some past experience. For example, A few years ago the company where I worked used BEA (now owned by Oracle). I kept the original license and we never upgraded the version as the original version was sufficient for our needs and worked well. Some years later I got dinged by a BEA license audit (they were in the process of selling to Oracle and were trying to maximize their cash flow for their ledger), saying as we upgraded the cores in our server we needed to pay more for the license. I showed them our license and there was no mention of needing to pay more. I was then told, as we had purchased maintenance agreements (though we never needed them or used them), we implicitly agreed to the new licensing terms. We ended up paying them the difference.

So my question is, if I no longer purchase any maintenance agreement for Substance, does Adobe have any ability to take away the use of my current product?

Thanks.
