"Spontaneous engagement in life" is such a simple concept but I've never thought of it as a sign of healing from (or absence of) trauma. Since you've mentioned it I started seeing this sign more and more and it's such a good measure for how we're doing at any given point of our healing journey. Thank you.

The sad thing is I recognize this survival mode in the brain that prevents you from spontaneously engaging as far back as my childhood memories go and I just thought it was a personality type, not a sign of trauma. You know that sad video that went viral on youtube for that 60's experiment showing babies from abusive or neglectful homes who didn't play with the toys they were given like the other children did, and instead either focused on the threats in the room, or sought out the adults' affection that they were deprived of. THAT is exactly what came to mind when you mentioned the spontaneous engagement thing. And we go our whole lives like that, just seeking what we were missing/mitigating threats without actually engaging with what we have.

Thank you Alicia for all of the hard work and love you put into your content. I find your explanations very clear, concise, easily digestible, and presented with kindness. I appreciate you.

So true! I had developed so many food sensitivities, there were literally 6 things I could eat without becoming ill. It felt like everything--even the food I needed to stay alive--was dangerous. Then, I got help for my PTSD. Now, I can eat anything and everything, and feel great! I eat what supports my good health, and nothing is off limits. Pronoia is a much more enjoyable way to live! 😀

I am pretty new to Cinema Therapy, I love it. Which lead me to Mended Light. I subscribed on Youtube, but also on the site for a membership. I have my first phone call this coming Monday. I spent my whole life in and out of trauma and death, and 6 years ago it finally started to come out in ways that terrified me. There is not a thing that Jonathan or Alicia has said/listed that I haven't been through and that gives me some confidence that this may work. The VA has helped about 30%, but I've grown so tired of working with them through terrible advice from therapists, to therapists not showing to appts consecutively to the Crisis Line not scheduling a therapy appt. I am looking forward to this more than anyone could understand.

Ugh, I've been stuck in survival mode for a very long time. No wonder I'm having so many health issues. I have 4 of the ones you listed. Plus a couple more... thanks for breaking it down.
I'm currently trying to tell my brain it doesn't have to be think the way it does, but feel like I'm losing . I have short times I can convince it otherwise with the tools of Byron Katie and gratitude Journaling. But then I slip out out habit and fall right back where I am.
I love the neuroscience behind it. I gotta go find the other video you mentioned. I've got of work to do.

I developed DID. It was a really good way God made to protect my mind.

My brain straight up forgets like so many others. I saw self harm for the first time and my brain distracted itself with everything else going on that day. I forgot about my accountability wingman (bmt medical hold) because we rode to the hospital with the self harmer. I can still barely recall anything from the actual event beyond me blanking out and then being back at the base. I literally left my wingman at the hospital by accident. I'm so sorry for that. I literally had no control of my mind.

It's too late for me. I am 42. I have been living in trauma for 30 + years. It's too late for me. My mother died due to Parkinson's related illness and I am afraid that is where I am going to end up.

heh If you have ADHD your prefrontal cortex development can be delayed. I can't remember the exact age but can take as long as 30's to get to where neurotypicals are in their 20's? I think the early 30s?
