I was lucky enough to be a civilian in the class Rob just held. The Shawn Shim came back in stock while we were there. It's a game changer for doing the offset. Never want to use the marking gauge again. Another great addition to the process!

Thanks Rob. I asked a couple of weeks ago if you would do a video using the Shaun shim and you responded "will do" and you did that a more, as always.

Great method! I simply made perfect dovetails the first time I try... just by following your videos. I really enjoy to make it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Rob.

Thank you for this method. I started using it when you first introduced it and it has improved the quality of my dovetails. I used it on drawers for a coffee table and two end tables. Thanks again.

Great tips. I like the Shawn shim. If was still working in a machine shop, I would make my own. But I will most likely order one soon.

Glad I watched to the end before commenting. Tip #6 was on my mind through the video. Now I have to go check if my dovetail marking knife has the old blade or the new one. :)

Great tutorial, Rob. I learned your offset method by watching your videos during the Covid lockdown period last year. So I guess that’s one good silver lining out of that large black cloud! My dovetails—which I admit were not great up to that point despite trying hard to improve—suddenly became really good once I fully adopted your method. FWIW, fully adopting your method means using a Cosman dovetail saw and dovetail marking knife in my opinion. Outstanding tools plus an outstanding method makes for near-perfect joinery. Also, Tip #2 was the one I really needed to learn here… I had been scratching my head trying to figure out why I was getting some too-loose or too-tight dovetails; now I know to stay on the same reference surface for both offsets! Thanks again for the great instruction! (I‘ll be ordering the 22 TPI marking knife today.)

Rob what’s the reason for using the .025 side of the Shawn shim when cutting pine with your dovetail saw? I remember seeing you do that in a previous video but can’t remember the reason for it with pine specifically. Thank you!

Watching tip #6 I realized if you see the bottom board protrude on the right you cut the right side of the tail, and the opposite if you see the opposite side. So looking at what sticks out from the bottom board should make it easy to remember which side of the tail to cut on.

I was baffled on why to offset, but i understand it now.
But my question is...

If you don't offset, and you knife the line, and you split that line with your saw, aren't you only off by HALF a saw kerf?

Looking fwd to putting this into practice.

Thanks Rob!
