LIMASSOL ZOO

The Limassol Zoo, located in the heart of the city is the oldest zoo on the island and has a long and varied history. Established in the late 19th century, the zoo began as an aviary for exotic birds. Its origins date back to the days when Cyprus was a British colony and the British administration at the time wanted to create an animal sanctuary for the city to enjoy. They began searching for a suitable location for their new project and after surveying various sites, they chose the public gardens of Limassol, drawing up new plans for the enclosure almost immediately. A group of like-minded local conservationists and animal lovers helped to establish the aviary on the site and their small collection of birds, housed in makeshift enclosures, proved to be a very popular attraction. The went on to receive visitors from all over the island. New birds were constantly added to its collection and as the facility grew the enclosure was improved eventually becoming a major attraction.
