Rack Railway of Diakopto-Kalavrita is a scenic narrow gauge railway that starts from the coastal town of Diakopto and ''climbs'' to Kalavrita at 720m in a 23km route. The line is next to river Vouraikos and crosses the homonymous gorge. It is worldwide known for its unique landscapes and route. However there are some highlight points on the line such us ''Dikastiria'' and ''Portes''. To the latter is dedicated our video....Portes (hellenic word for Doors) is the narrowest place of the gorge. Many years ago (before WW2) there were big doors at the entrances of the two tunnels which opened only for the train. It was tha only way to stop villagers from moving for free and as a result use the train. Today tha ''Rack Railway'' is running every day as tourist-excursion train with 3 trains from Diakopto (on Weekends 5 trains) and 3 from Kalavrita (on weekends 5 trains) servicing the line. The old Billard and Decauville railcars have also been replaced by new ones built by Stadler.

Beautiful scenery. The photography was perfection plus. I noticed a lot of reinforced retaining walls too. I did, however,  notice that this railroad had to be built before the advent of rail plates. The rails were screwed or spiked directly the ties. That is extremely labor intensive. This is my type of railroading for sure.

Excellent video. What gauge is this railway? It looks narrower than metre-gauge. Also, it appears that the line has been re-routed; why did they do that? It involved boring a longer tunnel!

KALAVRITA, acouple of hours east of Athena, has a special place in Greek history for the Germans massacared all the males on an afternoon during WW2, after local Greeks killed German soldiers.

There are two clocks on the church, one at current time and the other static at the moment the massacre started. Read full details in Wikipedia

It's a pity, because I have found your channel after visiting the Greece.
