#2019ASA Decolonizing Methodologies: 20 Years of Research for Indigenous Peoples and Social Justice

On the twentieth anniversary of the groundbreaking book, Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous Peoples, this panel recounts the tremendous contributions of Dr. Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s critical analysis of the role of Western research on the colonization of Indigenous communities. Her articulation of alternative methods for avoiding colonial-minded mistakes have generated new generations of research that continues to evolve. In her presentation, Dr. Smith reflects upon the impact of her book over the past twenty years and discusses future directions for decolonizing research methods into the 21st century. Senior scholars and early career panelists also discuss how Dr. Smith’s work has influenced their research and thinking and how it continues to shape how we research with Indigenous peoples and communities of color.
