Worst Rattle Ever BMW Single Vanos FIXED

Today we going to work on the good old BMW E36 , with the Single Vanos M52B28 Engine . The complain of the owner ( me ) is , the worst rattle / noise coming out of the vanos unit EVER . Let's try to fix it , before it try to fly away from the hood .

Just to add some a thing for DIY to make it easier -
the fit of the sleeve inside the vanos body with the bearings and shims is loose enough to allow you just to undo the big 18mm nut on the vanos piston and leave the gear bolt that is reverse thread ... just tap the vanos piston on a clean table after you have the nut out and the sleeve will come out ... this way you can start grinding the sleeve and then check the fitment

Nice DIY guys. I did the Vanos washer upgrade and the Beisan anti-rattle kit ( Jan. 2011)on my M50B25 vert, make 10-'93, at 190k km's. But after 2 years I read on a BMW forum the Beisan o-rings is as bad as the BMW OEM ones. I can't tell because I'm now on only 213k km's, because I drive my vert only about 3000 km a year, hahahaha. Maybe the Amazon ones are a different better brand.

BTW I tightened the washer nuts at 9 Nm instead of the recommended 10 Nm, because it would move even more smoothly( read it on a forum). After the washer upgrade and anti-rattle kit, I had a completely "new" car!! Dutch regards, Nico.

How do you prevent the cam from rotating did the timing go off timing in the intake cam shaft?

In my car that vanos piston bearing has about same clearance but it doesn’t rattle at all, I guess it’s because of that springloaded washer upgrade, my car came upgraded from factory it’s -96 e39

Silicone is best for rubber and plastic. I would suggest a moly grease for this. Also, I hope the cap nut was installed and torqued before checking for free play. I didn't see him say or do that. I would also suggest you follow all factor torque specs. They are not decided randomly. Increasing or decreasing this value will eventually cause regret.

Do yo need to block the camchaft and flyweel? I watched a video about the double vanos from nathans diy and he said if you do not move any thing you dont...

My problem is rattling. I don't know if it's the vanos or not. But when It idles then rattles. Coming between the engine intake. Somewhere there. When I accelerate u can't hear it anymore.
