Canada is not a melting pot as the US. Multiculturalism is official government policy. It’s not just a ‘thing’. Canada encourages communities to maintain their cultural uniqueness. It’s a cultural mosaic. Keeping one’s cultural distinctness is considered a positive thing.

Most don’t care about fashion and have a go with the flow vibe. The climate has something to do with it. Canadians are far less class conscious. Urban Canadians probably place a bit more importance on fashion than non-urban ones, but no judgement. It’s been said that Anglo Canadians, such as Toronto and Vancouver, care more about labels. Montrealers, however, place a very high value on what is fashionable (as opposed to labels) and are universally known for their sense of style. It’s their ‘Frenchness.’

Canada is a mosiac, think of a Quilt with many squares each representing a cultural heritage, but all together we are one multi-faceted mosaic quilt, and yet still maintain your cultural identity but go on to connect with the surrounding "squares" (i.e. cultures, ethniticites) and grow to discover the whole Canadian Quilt.

For Canadians there is a definite difference between Colleges and Universities

I think what he is saying about people sticking to people from the same origins is true for all first generation immigrants. My grandparents came from Finland and lived in a largely Finnish community. But the children are the ones that make friends beyond their immediate culture/country. It is about where people feel comfortable and the beauty of Canada is that you can find groups that make you comfortable.

I'm pissed at whomever dared to call themselves a fellow Canadian and made this man feel this way! 😂

Not saying he didn't have some valid points, just that I always felt that the basically infinite number of different cultures and traditions that people bring with them to our country are often SO COOL!

There's always a new perspective or tasty treat to discover. I can't imagine not having been blessed with access to all of that growing up!

LoL that guy is so lost, I seen that video but honestly every he mentioned is a personal thing not a society thing.

No matter what country you move to or visit there will ALWAYS be some people who will live/socialize/seek support with those of the same culture. BUT in Canada you do not have to. In most cases those who do congregate with their own cultural background in a community either they or their offspring eventually leave it.

In the indigenous communities here in canada we are very family oriented

If anyone of any country is going to Canada to live the best two things to do is 1) be able to converse ok in English, 2) get interested in hockey. If you can speak hockey you will have no problem finding people to talk with.

I worked in the Bahamas for a few years, no matter which way you travel, a foreign country is still culture shock. For me, it was learning that I would never gain a Bahamian friend, only expat friends. Homesickness occurs even in paradise.

He does have the right attitude of learning as much as your can.

Foreign students can get a virtually guaranteed work permit for a couple years after graduation- after which it is even easier to emigrate to Canada.

Families aren't necessarily broken- english background, families are more distant, but you still care for them. In Toronto, I am aware of many inter-generational families, primarily from Mediterrean and Slavic backgrounds. Not so much anglos.

Competitiveness: He is saying, I believe, that foreign students are not necessarily wanting to be number one in class, just want to pass and take the piece of paper home. The piece of paper back home is more valuable for a career than the knowledge being taught.

I think the mobility of Canadians makes us more distant from our Grandparents. I never lived closer than 900 miles from mine when I was a child.

Immigrants in Canada are given the opportunity to succeed. It isn't a guarantee - you still have to work for it. Also, they don't have to move to area's with "their" people. Immigrants often move to areas where they have familiar food and can hear their own language etc. It's a comfort thing. Anyone is welcome within (or outside) these neighbourhoods. (especially for food which tends to be more authentic and amazing). It's also not that we aren't welcoming, we just feel rude approaching a stranger without a reason. (get us in an elevator, we'll talk your ear off, usually starting with the weather). In the city, people tend to dress better (mainly because they have access to more stores) but it doesn't really matter. People might comment or admire your nice things, but they aren't looked down on if they don't have it too.

I think what he is noticing that people who are new to any new country will keep more to themselves until they feel more comfortable, but if you’ve been here for awhile you will see groups of people with friends of different heritages. I will tell you that I hate people using race to differentiate between people of different heritages, we are one race, the human race, we all bleed the same, we all have the same insides. I am a mixture of Scottish, Irish, Maori & First Nations of Canada. I have always got along with everyone, maybe it was all my relatives were all different colours from really white to black & everything in between. Sending lots of Love❤️

I once heard 'Canada is a salad bowl, US is a melting pot'. Pretty much sums it up.

I'm planning to be an international student very soon myself, hopefully and I'm thinking Canada too. But I have friends who have set the expectations for me. Canada is the top destination for Caribbean people to do work and study. USA is popular for college summer work programmes and farm work.

Canada never says melting pot, we use the term mosaic, so each nation can maintain their identity within our nation.

I would think in the larger cities you will see the younger generation caring about labels, but most places there really isn’t that much of that.

In regards to the clothes I think it's only important on Sundays. : ) Lots of comparing goin' on there.

Canada is definitely proudly multicultural and celebrates all the different ethnicities. There is no need to change who you are although to get the best experience as an immigrant it is helpful to learn English or French. I wish this man had of joined a Meetup or something. i lived in Toronto for years and met so many wonderful people of a wide variety of cultures who i remain close to although i live in Vancouver now
