AP Precalculus is getting some MAJOR changes. And when I say major, I mean MAJOR. The College Board has decided to split AP Precalculus into two classes now: AP Precalculus AB and AP Precalculus BC. No, I’m not kidding. They actually split Precalculus into two classes..

I'm taking AP Precalc rn and our class has a whopping 10 people (9 of us juniors, 1 senior). I'm taking the class because I was told by the precalc teacher that AP would "prepare you for AP Calculus AB better than honors would." I'm starting to see the horrid inaccuracy in that statement.

But honestly, this only raises one question in my mind: what really is the best way to prepare for AP Calc AB? I keep hearing from everyone that precalc is not a good preparation period for calc, but I never hear about an alternative from anyone.

If they’re gonna offer new AP math classes, they should at least offer ones that count for college credit.

Why do they even have ap precalc at all? Precalc is not a college-level course, although colleges offer it as a catch-up course. First-year college math is calculus. In fact even many/most high school students who take AP calc and want to focus in STEM then retake calc their first year in college, because college-level calculus is more advanced than ap calc (BC or AB). Of course it depends on the students, but I’m talking in general

The difference would be that Precalculus AB would probably include just a standard precalculus course and BC would add actual calculus

As someone who took advanced precalculus in hs the year before it became AP it makes me mad that I could've had a higher gpa since precalc wasn't even an honors class. Many colleges don't even take the ap precalc credit anyways lol

Ap precalc prepares you better than accelerated precalc, but splitting the class is a dumb idea.
aslo in some schools you need precalc to take calculus so taking AP preclac instead of accelerated precalc is a better option before calc

Where did you get the information that College Board has decided to do this? After looking it up, all I found was that some school districts had two courses when it was still being piloted and that at least one is planning to split the course later on. This doesn't mean anything because local school districts can technically teach the courses however they want. This doesn't mean the exams will be split.

My high school has Ap precalc itself, AB, and BC. Most seniors like myself are talking AP precalc for college credit, which on my end is a pretty good decision, because my (supposedly) major in college would provide a math class the equivalent of AB. I've heard rumours in my school that Ap precacl does not teach real calc, and most people just resort to Ap stats because its easier. No offense, just my humble opinion.

they should just make an AP Calculus class that covers Calculus III topics and call it CD much like how AB covers Calc I and BC covers Calc II.
