VFX Breakdown - Dynamo Dream Teaser

Hoh man- the little compressed instagram version of this breakdown has been reposted so many times I figured it'd be good to release a version with a couple more pixels!

I've been really excited about this type of workflow in terms of what it means for making crazy films in a garage, and I've been experimenting a bunch with it in the months since (tons of viewport compositing in Blender. All the CG stuff in this video is blender's realtime eevee engine, which has just been a blast). I've been posting lots of breakdowns/tuts/experiments on the patreon (thank you to everyone over there!):
Although I'm still working on full-on- tutorials I'll be posting here for everyone pretty quick. Almost done! Bit off more than I could chew for a minute here :P

I love that it took me all this time to realize the elevator was a cheat to get around the lack of shooting space. This thing looks so crazy good, Ian.

As a guy with a theater degree, I'm going to make the same comment that I did on the no-behind-the-scenes version of this video: the acting is awesome. IIRC, the actress is Ian Hubert's wife. She makes this look easy, but it's not. Everything she does in this scene, she convinces us that she's not acting, she's just going about her real life. She's just putting on her boots, she gets onto the elevator because she wants to grab some food before she goes wherever she's going. When she watches the robots on the screen she pays precisely the right amount of attention (even though, in reality she's looking at a green screen). She looks like she's not acting because she's such a talented actress. Believe me, getting this kind of performance out of most actors is like pulling teeth. Everything in this scene would look like a bunch of fake sci-fi BS without her at the center grounding it all. It looks real because she makes it seem real. Others have noted how she makes one of her turns seem like it's a camera rotation -- truly awesome -- such a lovely performance.

I loved the dog under the food vendor, chilling there not running into the greenscreen, what a good boy.

The fact you made this using blender and a simple setup is both beautiful and so inspiring to me. I rarely leave comments on videos but on yours I just had too! A+

Have watched this teaser so many times and I STILL cannot believe it's eevee, it looks wonderful, and the green screen elements are seamless. Brilliant all around.

0:47 the way that elevator springs down and up is amazing attention to detail, wonderful additions that serve as storytelling at the same time

Do you have any idea how inspirational your videos are Ian? One thing I love about YouTube is it has democratized filmmaking. Not just having the ability to upload your art directly to the fans, but people like you who show us how to create Hollywood quality films without giant Hollywood budgets. Just know you're appreciated.

this one single take alone is the reason why I got interested in Blender, seriously.

2:00 The practical subject rotation and camera pan are a nice touch!

That rotation at the end was brilliant and really smart.

every time i see this i'm blown away that it's all in eevee, from the realistic look to how polished it is. this is a huge testament to ian and eevee that cannot be expressed enough. the lighting, the textures, the particles.. it just feels so lived in and amazing. i swear this is better then some big budget movies

A lot of impressive things here but the fact that this was rendered with Eevee is really surprising.
