Autonomous cars and planes are often in the news. But what about unmanned ships?

Japanese researchers have been testing the world’s first unmanned amphibious ship on a lake in the Japanese mountains.

The amphibious tourist bus was remotely controlled on a two-kilometer trip. It used a combination of 5G wireless and autonomous operation technology.

Amphibious ships don’t need to be loaded or unloaded in port. So they could also help solve a shortage of crew on domestic shipping routes.

The lake was chosen because it has few waves. But the next step is to try the ship in choppier sea waters!

The researchers are hoping that this experiment would eventually become part of a worldwide autonomous and unmanned shipping system.
