Some of these guys also robbed a bank in broad daylight in the middle of Amsterdam. Because a car chase through Amsterdam wouldn't end up well for them, they decided to to execute their getaway by speedboat over the canals instead. The thing was, at this one specific turn where they had to go from one canal to the other, you had to go either really slowly or at a very specific speed (which was fast) because of shallow water. If you didn't have that exact speed with this boat, you would crash. The driver of the speedboat practiced this relentlessly for months, and the getaway worked. These guys were extremely intelligent and dedicated.

Can’t believe they fell for the old “No I don’t have the gilders, I erm, burned them to keep warm, oh and I’m crazy, totally loco, please move me to a psych ward with minimal security”

These guys planned this out scarily well it was an extremely intelligent plan.

For those that don't know (which is propably anyone not from the Netherlands).
Peter R. de Vries was a crime reporter who spent most of his life bringing attention to, and helping with, various cases, from ongoing cases, to cold cases.
In 2021 he was assasinated in Amsterdam by people linked to a case he was currently working on.

His life's motto was "On bended knee is no way to be free" (sometimes said as "It is better to die standing than live kneeling"), something he did to the very end.
He was one of the most revered journalists the Netherlands ever had.

I loved how you described the uzis being dropped and the glasses being smashed in the beginning as if it was a shrug and revealing its true meaning later on. It felt like foreshadowing, I knew it was planted but I didn’t expect the glasses to truly play a role.

This is like a PS1 true crime documentary and I’m so here for it

If you don’t live in the Netherlands, the effects of this kidnapping are still felt. Also for some reason the escape of a gorilla was front page news for months. It’s a weird country.

It's so funny how all the toughest gangsters always give each other the cutest little nicknames

Really enjoyed the video! I'd recommend adding subtitles though, since you have so much terminology like names, locations or currency in a foreign language.

As a dutch person, I've heard this story too many times, but its nice to see it in late 90's game graphics for a change.

that ad hook really sums up how incredible this video is. easily the best video of the year in my opinion i mean the low poly style mixed with the semi realistic lighting is absolutely perfect for this kinda of story

I just LOVE the car engine revving transition between “He was good at stealing cars, ” and the scene taking us back to the story. YOUR MIIINNDD >>>>

25:35 Cor van hout hauling five 100kg bags in the back of the fan in 30 seconds is quite the achievement of physical strength. I dont think I could do it

I work at the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam, am a big Heineken nerd and I know that the Heineken family personally asked us not to mention/talk about the kidnapping

Never seen this channel before, production quality is nuts. Even with low res animations, y’all animated every single part of this and I’m impressed

The way you unravel each twist with such precision makes this an absolute masterclass in storytelling. Gripping from start to finish—Hoog, you never miss.

Who left the tip though?!? This was such an incredible video, I’m addicted to this channel now. Every now and again you stumble across a channel that is just head and shoulders above the rest of the shit on YouTube. This is one of those channels. I love the detail and quality of the story telling and animation.

I also love this story so much because it’s exactly something I would do. I’ve never committed a major crime. But I’ve fantasized about how I would if I ever did. It’s very similar to this. But I’ve only ever dreamt of doing 30% of this. You basically start with the first step of the crime and imagine all the ways you could conceivable get caught. Then you build in double and triple layers of protection so that it becomes impossible, or supposedly impossible, to track you in any way. I think this crime would’ve been solved much more quickly in 2025 due to the massive amount of surveillance that exists, as well as other tech like small chips and tracking devices. Incredible story though
