Math comes naturally to some, but even simple equations remain baffling brainteasers to others. This math equation went viral for being much more complicated than it seemed — or so simple that people got tripped up overthinking them.

This equation has 2 wildly different answers depending on what you learned in school, and it's dividing the internet.

Viral math equations have been known to divide people on the internet. Some problems are so mind-bogglingly hard that they seem impossible, even if they're meant for elementary school students.
This latest viral problem shared by Twitter user @pjmdoll is one such equation.

The equation is: 8 ÷ 2(2 + 2) = ?

Here's the correct way to solve 8 ÷ 2(2 + 2) = ?

First, add the numbers in the parentheses.

8 ÷ 2(4) = ?

Now, do the multiplication and division from left to right.

8 ÷ 2(4) = 4(4) = 16.

The confusion is caused by the difference between modern and historic interpretations of the order of operations, known as PEMDAS:

Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication and Division (left to right)
Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

There is a very easy way to do this.

There are several paths to 1 as the only correct answer. But this is the easiest.
For those long and difficult equations we normally break them into segments.

Splitting this terribly complicated equation into segments, is a method that is INCONTROVERTIBLE.

[Look for explicit operators not enclosed in brackets, then put brackets around each segment.]
There is only the divisor. This simplifies and clarifies this long and tedious equation.

i.e. 8 / 2(2+2) -> [8] / [2(2+2)]

Now we clearly see it is 8 / 8 = 1
For people who do not understand parenthesis, this avoids the silly question of what to do 1st.

Alternately for the purest:
When you write an integer in front of a set of brackets, it is not a term, it is merely a mnemonic telling us to multiply everything within the parenthesis by that integer. The multiplication(s) occur INSIDE the brackets via the distributive property of multiplication. I.E. 2(4)=(2x4)
Simply dropping the brackets results in 24. This is not 2x4. You can not say it is juxtaposition multiplication because two digits together is simply a two digit number. And you can not replace brackets with an explicit multiply, you can only drop the brackets when solved.

(2x2+2x2) = 2(2+2) = 2(4) Writing it in this fashion does not change the value or meaning of the expression it is just a shorter way to write the EXACT SAME thing. They are interchangeable. The integer leading the parenthesis actually exists ONLY within the parenthesis. [Even tho it is written outside.] It must be returned to the interior of the parenthesis when you go to evaluate them. You can not take this [non-existent] integer and use it with another operation, as it's existence lies only within the parenthesis. And you can also not take part of a term, use it in one operation then take another part of the term and use it in another operation.

No physics or engineering text book would agree with his conclusion.

Sorry guy, 2(2+2) is a product, a single value.
Division by a product = division by its factors, i.e., 2 and (4)
And no, you are not done with () after you do your addition. You are left with 2(4), not 2x4.
Distribute the 2 into 2(4) and you get (2x4). Factor out the 2 from (2x4) and you get 2(4). 2(4) and (2x4) are equivalent and interchangeable.
8÷2(2+2)= 8÷2(4) = 8÷(2x4) = 8÷8 = 1
Alternatively,
8÷2(4) = 4÷(4) = 1
Always remember to add () when expanding ab into its component factors. ab = (axb), not a x b.
For purposes of the order of operations, 8÷2(2+2) = 8/(2x(2+2)).

The parenthetical factored number a(b+c) must be resolved first into (ab + ac), but since a=b=c=2 this calculates into the number 8.
8÷8=1

8÷2(2+2)=1
Because 2 is related to (2+2).
Solution
8÷2(2+2)
=8÷2×4
=8÷8
=1

But
8÷2×(2+2)=16
Because × between 8÷2 and (2+2) is equal to (8÷2)×(2+2).
Solution
8÷2×(2+2)
=8÷2×(4)
=4×4
=16

In england we are told bodmas as brackets other division multiplication addition subtraction so division is always 1st

So first I asked ChatGPT: 8 divided by 2 times 2 plus 2 and it said "10". Then I asked it to recalculate after putting parentheses around the 2 plus 2. It said the answer is "16". So then I asked it if I divide 8 beers between 2 groups, such that each group has two men plus two women, how many beers does each person get? Sadly, it said only "1". I was hoping for "16".

I assume you know that a ÷ a =1, (a ≠ 0)
Therefore, what is the value of 2(2+2) ÷ 2(2+2)...

rampakeshbharat

The problem occurs because term is presented incorrectly. You have two options:
a) (8/2) *(2+2)=16
b) 8/(2(2+2))=1
Rule Left to right has nothing to do with math and you know that.

Wa alaikum assalam,
Sorry, I disagree.
For clarity :- is obelus
If 8:-2(2+2)=16 then
16x2(2+2)=8
32(4)=8
128=???
If 8:-2(2+2)=1 then
1x2(2+2)=8
2(4)=8
8=8 Answer is 1
Not even mentioned implied multiplication due to juxtaposition carrying a higher priority over explicit division and multiplication. Or the fact the 2(2+2) is a monomial as in
f(x) f being function.

The answer is 1, or the answer is 16, but obviously not both.
That would be an eXclusive OR, aka XOR.
1 XOR 16 = 17

The real answer is 17!
