8 years I spent in the blue suit and it was the best thing I've ever done.

Training has gone up 4 weeks from when I did the training back in 1991. It was bloody hard at RAF Swinderby but ultimately rewarding because I got to see places I'd never ever likely to visit now.

Good luck to the new recruits going through RAF Halton right now. Remember - Per Ardua Ad Astra

I am honestly very scared about joining the RAF. I've never been away from home for more than a week. And knowing that, as someone trying to become a Regiment Gunner, I may even spend years without being able to see my friends and family...i will not lie...it is very scary. But i gotta be brave, right? This is an opportunity to do something that means a lot. And despite my fears of it all, i am still gonna go ahead. I have my DPAA test on the 2nd November so wish me luck

When I served back in the 90s at RAF Cranwell, we had a Corporal who was a peeping tom and got caught, a Flight Lieutenant who glassed another Officer in the mess and got tried at Civilian Court, not Court Marshall, because of the severity of the incident. We had a female Flight Lieutenant OC PSF who was a horrendous bully to the majority of the staff, absolutely vile and who went on to become a Squadron Leader at Halton Basic Training. Staff would say she treated the new recruits abominably. She now has kids, so god knows how she treats them. We also had an RAF bandsman who was abusing his own children and got imprisoned for it. All on one two year period.

I took my grandson down to RAF Halton on Monday, day 00, He was quickly away into the block, no long goodbyes. We attended the family briefing, well worth the time, as the ten weeks in these videos are now a little different. there was also lots of questions, from the families. You can also ask private questions after, the people giving the briefing are the actual instructors. so everybody learnt a bit. For myself it was a day of memories, over fifty three years ago I arrived for my RAF apprenticeship at Halton, it turned out my grandson is in the barrack block behind the one I spent two years in. You have to say goodbye outside of the block, it's not a long walk from the carpark. However be warned the gate opens at the time stated on the joining instructions, and there is nowhere to stop, on the road, but once open they quickly get you parked. and there are people to direct you to the correct block. They are well practiced.

Probably a weird thing to say but you know how they have the alarm for 5.45? would you be allowed to get up before that or would that not be allowed? just because I normally get up at 5 O'clock and it would also give me more time to prepare and get ready.
