The death of the network engineer? No way! Everyone knows I feel strongly about automation, and I completely agree with Jeremy’s take! Slowly but surely, over the next few years, the tools we use will look just a little different, but the network engineer will always be needed

Do not be afraid.
Automation or not, you still need to know what you're doing and this includes understanding the networking concepts and troubleshooting methods.

Hi jeremy !! Thanks for the video ! I have a question about automation : are we gonna use it for troubleshooting? I mean well for configuring routers and switches it will help us a lot but if a problem occurs on some device like ospf ? Are we gonna log on the concerned router via CLI and use the commands we know or automation can do it ? Thanks fir everything you’re a great guy !!

I hear so many people talking about how the cli is “dead” yet everyone I know is still punching away at the cli.

If you think you can get into programming, I'd say give it a shot.
A hybrid network engineer will be the future.

Like you said, you still need to know the concept when system breaks and you have to troubleshoot it.

I would say I actually work in Network Automation but it’s not called that. As I work with Industrial Automation Control Systems (IACS) and many PLC’s mostly with Rockwell Automations equipments and Cisco Stratix Switches for the Industrial Networks which are imbedded in many of our newer system designs vs what was legacy designed systems. My 1 coworker and Process Automation Engineer & ArchitectI work with is a CCNA, CCNA Industrial Cert and working on his CCNP. But we have to upgrade many of our OEM company plant automation systems from the ground up upgrading old legacy automations control in many our power plant customer systems. It’s not “IT”, it’s “OT” in Operations Technology that controls and automate lots of operations processes and often lots of troubleshooting involved as well. That’s Network Automations to me and with L3 Cisco gear, just less on the routers in the normal network. Your asked to do a lot in that environment as an Engineer.

So, network engineers would be needed to troubleshoot

Encouraging, especially when everywhere you can read "CLI is dead!" shouts

I only found out I hated working with programming after my first job. Discovered the world of networking soon after, fell in love with it. Present day.... '-.-
