This will be a tough call - is the new GR86 or a used 987.2 Cayman the more fun-to-drive coupe for under $35K?

I recently just bought a 987.1 cayman and I’ll say that both these cars look great . The Porsche in my opinion looks timeless. That mid engine feel and balance is otherworldly to me. But like I said just my 2¢ as a cayman owner.

This is almost EXACTLY the sports car “dilemma” I have. This helped more than I could’ve imagined. Thank you!

I think it would add value to discuss running costs. Tires, brakes, maintenance costs, etc. That factors into what I consider great track cars, as lower running costs let me afford more track days 😊

This guy takes technical review/comparison to another level. Really shows that he knows what he’s talking about.

With the correct tires and driving technique the porsche can simulate the feel of GR86 to some extent. The real difference is that the porsche can overlap with some of the GR86 strengths BUT the GR86 cannot overlap with the strengths of the porsche. As far as I know, both stock cars are pretty reliable.

Another great GR86/BRZ video that is convincing me more and more. I love my 986 Boxster, but the value and practicality of the 86/BRZ can't be beat.

Having owned both a 987.1 Cayman S and a FRS: I have to agree with your assessment. The 86 is playful, while the Cayman is all business.

I am a PCA national DE instructor, have instructed students in 86’s and driven them on the track. They are ok, but no where in the same league as a cayman/boxster. For the occasional track use, nothing beats a cayman.

The 86 is like a modern 944 in my opinion

I would take the Cayman but I have to admit the new 86 is a very good proposition as well.

Own a 987.2 cayman exactly the same as the one in the video. Exceptional car and insanely fun to drive.

I have so much respect for your views. You really know what you're talking about unlike many reviewers who can't drive.

sold a boxster and kept my miata factor means the most to me, the porsche had no soul, the mx5 has bags of it especially supercharged like mine.

I really want an 86, the exterior is phenomenal and it sounds like they nailed the driving dynamics. However I can't get over how low-rent the interior is and the sound is uninspired. I understand they needed to build the car to a budget, but IMO they should have charged an extra $1500 for the premium and ditched all that god awful plastic on the head unit and loaded the interior with Alcantra. VW and Honda can do it, so can Toyobaru. And I'd like to hear one with the fake sound synthesizer removed and a proper exhaust on the car.

Definitely noticeable difference in the rear spring rate. On longer bumpier drives, it is a little uncomfortable - like being lightly shaken for a long time. Great review!

Just found this channel - what a great review! I was daydreaming about this exact choice recently. The Mighty Algorithm brought us together. Thanks for a thoughtful, well-produced video.

I paid 38 for my 2016 Cayman.
Zero maintenance in 1.5 years (12k) miles
It's a much better car.

Reg the difference between your BRZ and the GR86-
How much of the playfullness is due to the primacy of the GR86 vs the pilot sport 4 of your BRZ
