Why is English so hard to spell?

On that "Save = gave ≠ have" bit, the reason is not because have magically changed pronunciation asynchronously with Save and Gave, it's because have was supposed to be "hav" but we can't have 'u's or 'v's at the end of words, so they said "eh, we'll just put a silent 'e' there" but they forgot that the rule of changing a vowel based on silent 'e' exists, so that's why.
