Wow. I never considered how leasing can help put someone who was underwater on their old car into a neutral state of equity before buying another car. Let me see if I understand this. A person making payments towards owning a car that is in a position of negative equity sells their car and takes the loss, then they can go into a lease instead of buying another car, and since a lease doesn't involve the debt obligations of buying this can 'reset' their negative equity. Did I get it right? Does that mean that owing more than what your current car is worth can effect the finances of buying your next car? I always bought my cars in cash I'm just curious.
