This is an amazing gay film from Vietnam, showing the journey of Việt (acted by Dao Duy Bao Dinh) and Nam (acted by Pham Thanh Hai), two young coal mine workers and lovers, that shifts in the middle of the story into dealing with the previous generation traumas of the Vietnam war veterans, of separation, and of poverty. The issues from the past are to repeat once again in the present generation, like an unfortunate curse that seems impossible to break.

I watched Việt and Nam (Trong lòng đất) in November last year in Thailand, where it won the Jury Prize of the 16th World Film Festival of Bangkok. Surreal scenes make this film really magical, like the opening scene with the boys naked on the dark coal mine; a moment that reminded me of the Brazilian gay film "A Cidade do Futuro" from 2016. That film also deals with a harsh environment, telling the story of displacement of a group of people as main frame social critical issue; and with the leads Gilmar and Igor making love in a cave and talking about their views on getting marriage, and having their coming out. The cave and the coal mine both as shelter places, protecting the gay boys in love from the rest of the world.

This looks so gorgeous and nostalgic. My parents were/are Vietnamese refugees (my dad passed away) and I remember watching their pirated dramas with bad dubbing overtop lol. This really takes me back, I hope I get to see it in a local theatre

This looks like an A24 film with beautiful cinematography and a heartbreaking story that reflects the way of life of the Vietnamese. I doubt the Vietnamese government would ever allow this to be released as it touches upon several sensitive subjects that may compromise how the world perceives the country. For those who are fortunate enough to have this available overseas, go and watch it.
