When you need a lawyer to leave your religion, that's a cult 😬

As someone who has grown up their entire life as a Mormon, (yes, i live in Utah) I absolutely agree. You’re never good enough. You always have to try to be better. Which, in some ways is admirable but it does get demeaning and exhausting. It really does feel like a cult, because they’re always trying to get more people to join, they’re really pushy about it, they just are really weird in general.

My whole mom’s side of the family except for her is mormon and it really is like a cult. i still love my family very much and i love spending time with them but i am kind of glad i dont live close enough to them to be forced to be mormon.

I grew up Mormon and it’s stressful. Not all the people are bad it’s just this constant walking on eggshells and never knowing if someone actually likes u cuz there’s unsaid judgements ALL. THE. TIME.

As a Mormon myself, there is people in our religion who treat it like a cult and it goes against everything we are taught. My personal experience being taught that no matter what God loves us, we are enough, and loving everyone despite their personal choices or views that are different than ours.

I actually am friends with two Mormons and they are NOTHING like the stereotypical Mormons at all so it’s interesting to hear about other Mormons and their experiences

I have one friend that is morman and perfectly normal, their family was always awesome. And then another friend whose family was basically a cult with 15 kids.

I have had a bunch of Mormons knocking on my house doors for days (I live in between two houses) they have literally been stalking me, I have never given my name or house numbers but they kept looking for me for weeks. They finally find me and despite me saying "I'm not religious" they say I HAVE to read their booklets and study, then call them. I'm very polite to people at the door but I think I'm going to have to be a bit more harsh. It's not cool to be on my tail like that, expecially when all these groups have come once and know I'm not interested.

Really bummed by this. I think everyone’s experience is different. I think the culture in Utah is vastly different from what it is elsewhere. I’m LDS, but have never felt this pressure she talks about or what I’m seeing in the comments. But I can respect her experience.

At the core of the church (and hopefully all churches) is love for self and love for all those around you. I think a lot of people do put unnecessary pressure on themselves due to wanting to appear like you have it all together. We all struggle, we all have needs, it’s okay to be vulnerable.

Anyway, much love to everyone seeing this! Hope you have a great day!

Living in a morman area. Everything is run by them and not being morman literally makes you 5 steps behind. Kids in my college will be passed along for being morman im not joking, a teacher finally was like "I will tell the news" cause this one girl was being passed along by the Dean cause she was in his church.

You're outcasted so badly. Mormans have to pay so much of their paycheck that I had friends who families couldn't eat so they could Pay the church. We one had a priest get confused on house and come screaming at my mom that she owes money and literally sat in our yard for a hour cause they thought we owed them money

It's so openly accepted that women need to take care of the men and kids and just openly sexist, openly anti lgbtq
So many people will just tell me how they hate gays and it's like????

It's beyond crazy living here compared to other states. It 100% is a cult

I was Mormon from birth to age 18. I think my family had a slightly less toxic approach to Mormonism, but the religion as a whole is just unhealthy. I was miserable with my self all through childhood because I was convinced that my mental illnesses/ identity would send me to hell. My family’s still Mormon and I’m super close to them, but very glad to no longer be a member.

My grandfather was excommunicated from Mormonism (thank god) because he refused to pay them $6000 to build a church out in Utah…we live in the Midwest.
My grandma on the other side of the family got re-baptized into the church about 5-6 years ago. I keep telling my mom it’s a cult and she says she knows but it’s the only thing that gets my grandma out of the house

I’m breaking down everyday because I’m not good enough. That would be the death of me.

As a current member I’d just like to add to the discussion.
1. If anyone is feeling forced to be a part of the church that is not okay.
2. The name thing isn’t a name you go by it’s a part of a sacred ordinance similar to the sacrament or communion. Again if someone doesn’t want to participate they should not be coerced to.
3. The problems in the church are not from the doctrine itself. It’s from the people that have misinterpreted or misrepresented what we believe and done very wrong things from that place.
I know that the doctrine in the church is true, but when I have kids I will teach them about it and I will make sure that it’s what THEY want and that they feel that it is right too. No one should be shamed for what they do or don’t believe as long as it’s not hurting someone else. And to members of the church that shame, that guilt, and that twist the doctrine into something that it isn’t, take a look at yourself instead of those you’re hating on. You’re the problem. You’re the reason the church gets called a cult.

Seeing some of y'all defend your religion. Thank you to those of you being decent people. But to others: Just because your experience is different/good/not a cult does NOT mean that she WASN'T in a cult. You have no right to tell her not to speak bad about it "because it makes y'all look bad." She is allowed to share her story and trauma.

I remember sitting in the temple (dark windowless room where you dress in robes and watch a boring movie then stand chanting around an altar). I thought to myself, "it's a cult, but it's the one true cult, so it's okay."

I absolutely agree with this! Not only will you never be good enough, you will never have the highest privileges and power that the authorities have. It's never about Christ with christians. It's about control.

i’m mormon. gotta say, some of us aren’t chill at all. i can totally see why people think we are a cult. but if mormons are being trashy to you that’s basically like the opposite of everything we’ve been taught. like ‘love everyone’ is suuuuper big in our religion but people think it doesn’t apply to them smh
