DIY // Blanket Jacket

This tutorial takes you through the steps of how to transform a woollen picnic blanket into a cute jacket - featuring oversized pockets! I'm obsessed with how this garment has come together and it's been on high rotation ever since completion.
The DIY process is a fairly straight forward flow that just includes a handful of finishing details that can make it a bit time consuming, so I'd recommend putting at least a day aside to complete this number!

Make what you can and ethically source the rest!
The Essentials Club tutorial channel is all about sharing the steps to become more resourceful and creative with crafting your own minimal, conscious wardrobe.

Suggested Fabric Amount Required (based off shorter length):
Size Extra Small = 1.3m (off the roll)
Size Small = 1.5m (off the roll)
Size Medium = 1.7m (off the roll)
Size Large = 1.9m (off the roll)
Size Extra Large = 2.1m (off the roll)
(add or take 0.2 metres for anything larger or smaller than these sizes)
NOTE: This amount is just for the outer material and will need a replica amount for the lining.

I watch a lot of Sewing Youtube but THIS video was the first one that made me think, "Wait, I think I can do that!" I made my jacket out of an old floral patterned quilt that belonged to my mom and lined it with an old bedsheet. It's not perfect, but I'm so proud of it. And it gets a ton of compliments, and I get to say "Yeah I made it!!!" Thank you so much for this video; it inspired action for me 💖

Tip: if you make the pieces on paper first you can copy this jacket over and over again without having to draft a new one every time.
This is very cute and your fabric is perfection !

The best tutorial I've seen. It made me make my first ever jacket. I have no prior experience with stitching

an alternative for fabric chalk would be dry soap bar! give it a try it draws really clear lines and easy to clean

I’m so excited to try this! I also love that the lining is a fun print and not just plain. I love mostly-hidden details like that.

Ok, I've never understood how to cut out a sleeve without a pattern before this video but the way you explained it made total sense. Thank you!!! And I am 100% making at least 100 of these, it is amazing!

I love what you’ve created from the blanket. Can I say that when your using your machine on thick fabric as I go. I use a walking foot. It’s much easier to over the thick areas. Love the colour .

I love when you said to keep the front side you like the most on top of the other, while the "standard rule" states front right (wearing the jacket) overlapping the left for women, and viceversa for men jacket. I definitely prefer your freestyle approach!!! 👍😎🤩 Ps: your tutorials are pure gold!!

Thank you so much for this! I’ve been wanting to make a jacket from an old quilt but have been too intimidated to try! You make this look simple enough that I think I’ve found my courage!

I made a jacket from a tickish woolish material with the help of this video. I am an absolute beginner and it turned out pretty good (with of course a few mistakes). I used a pattern of etsy btw

I'm just learning to sew and this is definitely going to be a goal of mine! My pet rabbit passed away and left a lot of IKEA blankets that I'd love to fashion to something I can stay warm in.
