Conservation Matters - Habitat Grows World Record Bighorns

Randy Newberg and Marcus Hockett are at the Wild Sheep Foundation headquarters to attend a celebration of conservation success. In 2017, two bighorn sheep were found on Wild Horse Island State Park in Montana that exceed the existing world record ram.

Many fail to understand the purpose of recording measurements of antlers and horns is to collect long-term trend data as to the health of the landscape, the habitat, and the species themselves. This video explains how that measurement system and the accumulated data base is used for conservation.

The Boone and Crockett Club, American conservation leaders, have a cadre of official measurers trained to gather the information and accumulate the most complete data set they can to help measure the quality of habitat that is expressed in the horns and antlers of these magnificent animals.

Absolutely fantastic story and all the credit goes to people like you Randy along with the great folks who put their time and money into such projects. Also... Us hunters and fisherman know exactly where most of that funding comes from. Good job Montana!

The most recent success story of how sportsmen and women have gone the extra mile(s) to protect and preserve North American wildlife. Thankfully, there are MANY more!

Cool story. I wish I could hear you when you come talk here in Denver. I just can’t afford the ticket prices.

What hunt would you recommend for a hunter that needs to stay in a hotel room or cabin? The reason why I ask is I am in the beginning stages of kidney dialysis. I must have access to electricity and a clean area to be able to use my dialysis machine at night. Any advice would be appreciated.

Arent the sheep on the island getting that big because there's no hunting on the island? If hunting was allowed and and the biggest/oldest rams were getting killed this would have never happen. Seems like putting that record in the book is like entering a trophy from a Zoo. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the book itself? Areas managed by hunting (natural management and conservation not preservation) cant compete with a State Park off limits to hunting and well maintained by human interfearance. I'm confused
