I've never experienced performance issues when running LOD at 3, 4 or 6. But maybe I'm not noticing? What are symptoms? The only reason I would use higher LOD is if you are suing similar camera moves like you do in this video for Machinima. Trying to keep the scene as realistic as possible is ruined when the LOD breaks down. Another solution though is to keep those kind of camera moves to a minimum or none at all.
