from what I've heard the reason for Kong's look in this movie was that RKO asked Toho to steer clear of the original Kong's facial features. Instead, Teizo Toshimitsu turned to Japanese macaques for inspiration. 

But yeah the long-ass arms/short arms switching back and forth are inexcusable

It's true there are times where one version of a foreign media is better then the other and there are times where it's the complete opposite and after watching the Japanese version of the film i was surprised by the night and day difference between them specifically how different scenes play out and not to mention I also decided to watch it in honor of godzilla vs kong to along with the other films and the zone fighter t.v. show ( which I haven't finished up yet but still )

Yep. Couple weeks ago we watched the Criterion BD with my godson to prep for the reboot. The movie is fun but remarkably bad and cheap-looking in parts. Saturday, we watched the 1933 Kong and the boy said he preferred the look of the stop-motion version, even though the effects no doubt looked primitive to him.
