KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The outbreak has affected several dozen people from five U.S. states and Mexico, according to the Associated Press .

Measles is so contagious a person may contract it simply by being in a room where someone with the virus once was.

It remains active on a surface for up to two hours. It is generally passed through sneezing and coughing and personal contact with infected bodily fluids.

We reached out to Dr. Joshua Freeman, Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Chief of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Hospital.

Dr. Freeman said there is really no reason that people should get the measles any more. Dr. Freeman stresses that vaccination is the best preventive.
