International Coastal Cleanup Day 2021: Action by Ministry of Natural Resources&Environment of Samoa

Marine litter negatively affects the environment, people and coastal economies around the world. In the Pacific region, the problem is even more severe given the reliance of countries on healthy ocean ecosystems and services.

With that in mind, SPREP actively participated in the commemoration of International Coastal Clean-up Day 2021 through the SWAP Project funded by Agence française de développement (AFD).

Thus, the SWAP project supported the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Samoa to carry out one beach clean-up action during the 2021 event. Participants acted for the preservation of their environment by collecting 365 kg of waste washed up or dropped on the Mangrove of Vaiusu.
