myself and my wife and my dad worked at Hughes aircraft company. my dad was the original engineer who designed the wings and control surfaces for the Phoenix missile and later became one of the program managers. the Phoenix first took to the are in 1962 equipped with analog computers. by 1968 the C version was produced and equipped with high-speed digital computers. while it is true that the Phoenix was originally designed to take out the Russian bombers, it was designed to take out an individual bomber or a complete squadron, as it was originally equipped with a proximity fuse the newer versions detonations we're facilitated by the onboard computers. the Iraqi pilot did as he was trained and the system function as designed.

The Phoenix was known as "unstoppable".... Without going into detail, it was not affected by radar, infrared, heat nor These systems created the HARM The Phoenix was also designed to carry not only a conventional warhead but a .25 kiloton nuclear warhead as well. With it's 200 mile range in the F-14 and 500 Mile range in the 1st Blackbird (which was cancelled, then relaunched as the yf12 with the falcon or gar9 missiles), the only true successful way to defend against the Phoenix was to fly outside of it's at mach 5+.... That's going to be tough.

The Germans had similar experiences when they would shoot at fully loaded B-17s and hit the bomb bay cause the entire plane to blow up usually taking out two more plane on either side of the one blown to pieces.... sometimes even they fighter plane would lose as well for being to close during the massive explosion....
