What do you guys like best about Toy Story 2?

jessie's backstory literally made me into a toy hoarder and my mom hates me for it to this very day

One thing my mom praised at the time it was new and I agreed with emphatically is that while Woody and Jessie in the TV show are implicitly love interests, the toys don't become a romantic couple after bonding and getting to know each other. That Woody doesn't break up with Bo and start a romance with Jessie - the thought probably doesn't even occur to him even if it did to some in the audience. Woody and Jessie wind up with a relationship more like a brother and sister, and it's Buzz that Jessie winds up with a more passionate romantic attraction to as hinted at in the end here and expanded on in the sequels.

Can we talk about the bloopers though?

Absolute genius adding outtakes to an animated movie 💀💀💀

Considering how troubled the production was for both of Toy Story 1 and 2, it’s incredible how the films turned out to be so much very well written and they are proof that even if you have a troubled production there is no excuse for a badly written story because Toy Story 1 and 2 had troubled production and they still were good. To give more context Woody’s personality was changed basically last minute where before he was almost the villain of Toy Story 1 were he voluntarily threw Buzz out of the window and Toy Story 2 was originally going to be a direct to DVD sequel because Disney thought that they could treat Pixar films like their direct to DVD sequels of the classics Disney films.

I love that in the first movie, buzz’s arm comes off, but in the 2nd one, woody’s arm does, it really emphasizes that the roles are switched in this movie

What’s impressive is that they invented new characters (Jessie, Bullseye) and they feel part of the “Toy Story gang” despite being introduced in a sequel. That’s very rare with possibly Puss in Boots in Shrek being the only other one I can think of.

Toy Story: Just because you’re not what you thought you were doesn’t mean you’re not part of a good thing.
Toy Story 2: Just because a good thing won’t last forever doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still enjoy it while it lasts.
Toy Story 3: Just because a good thing ends, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t good things ahead of you.
Toy Story 4: Screw all y’all, I’m leaving and joining the circus with my girlfriend.

The Jessie backstory scene also perfectly sets up 3, where Andy forgets about all of his toys, because he changed. While woody had the same hope that Andy still cared about them, while he didn't for most of his toys.

My favorite scene is when Buzz goes “Somewhere in that pad of stuffing is a toy who taught me that life’s only worth living if you’re being loved by a kid. And I travelled all this way to rescue that toy. Because I believed him.” Which is already a punch in the gut, and then Woody retorts with “Well, you wasted your time.” Ouch.

Another bit of genius in Stinky Pete's backstory is how understandable it is _why_ he was unsold for so long. In his show, he was the goofy/annoying comic relief character, and wasn't as cool, heroic or inspiring as the rest of the Roundup Gang. He wasn't the kind of person most viewers would aspire to be or tell stories about, least of all children, so of course he would be ignored while every Woody, Jessie and Bullseye went on to enrich someone's childhood for however long they lasted.

Pff, wow, I genuinely never even thought about how “Stinky Pete ends up with the worst owner he could have wanted” before. As a kid, I just thought, “oh no! Now he’s gonna get doodled on and look silly! Haha oh but… it’s not just that: after wanting to be appreciated for so long that his bitterness over nobody wanting to play with him shifted him into single-mindedly focusing on being admired as a perfect, pristine toy by hundreds of people a day instead, well. He finally *does* find someone interested in playing with him who’s decidedly *not* interested in her toys being perfect, mint condition specimens of their models.

TS2 really *doesn’t* leave any opportunity missed or detail un-played-with, no pun intended.

Even as a kid, I thought that Toy Story 2 just made Toy Story 1 better. I'm glad they made the sequel, because I don't think the franchise would be what it is today without it.

The thing I love most about Jessie's backstory, is that there are _no words_ (aside from the song lyrics of course). They explain her entire backstory using only visuals and a music score. Its the essence of "show don't tell."

5:52 Finally someone said it!! I can't believe what Buzz was reduced to in the 4th film, I just can't wrap my head around how any of the people in charge thought it would be a good idea at all!

I'm pretty sure that Toy Story 2 was the first Pixar movie to give us the iconic "Pixar moment".
Think about it.

Up - First 10 Minutes
Soul - Last 10 or so minutes
Inside Out - Riley's Apology
Finding Nemo - Barracuda
WALL-E - Losing WALL-E
Monsters, Inc. - Saying Goodbye to Boo
Monsters University - The Lake
Finding Dory - Following the Seashells
Toy Story 3 - The last 20 minutes

Toy Story 2 - When Somebody Loved Me

The Buzz vs Buzz fight when he throws our Buzz into the stick-it board always KILLED me. The look on his face; just seeing the start of it already took me out 😂

One thing that I love about the Toy Story sequels is that each one adds onto the world in a way that only applies to toys:

Toy Story 2: toy collectors, toy stores, toys being put in museums.
Toy Story 3: baby toys, toys getting donated/thrown away, destructive toddlers.
Toy Story 4: antiques, broken toys, handmade toys, toys at carnivals.

You cannot put these stories on a series not centered around toys, and that’s what makes the series amazing.

Ofc one would say that Toy Story 3 was the best movie in the trilogy, but Toy Story 2 remains the most unforgettable, enjoyable, and lovable one by far (at least imo). And Jessie was an amazing side character with lots of depth to her. Hell her backstory became the best and most memorable scene in all of Pixar...
