The Toy Story 2 You've Never Seen: Direct To Video Toy Story 2 - Canned Goods

In 1995, Toy Story took the world by storm. A sequel was an inevitability. Toy Story 2 would go on to release in theaters in 1999, but not without hitting a plethora of bumps in the road along the way. The 4 years between Toy Story 2's conception and release saw the movie change from a direct to video sequel, inspired by the success of Aladdin 2: Return of Jafar, to a fully fleshed out animated feature.

This original direct to video sequel was similar to the final release, though, with some major differences. Bullseye could talk (and was voiced by Martin Short), Utility Belt Buzz Lightyear and Zurg were only in a single scene, and Jessie wasn't present, in her place was a talking cactus aptly named Señorita Cactus. It was far from the perfect sequel that we wound up getting.

So today, we'll walk through the development, plot and evolution of the original Pixar sequel- Toy Story 2: Direct to Video.

Enjoy!

I kinda liked the idea of Buzz walking through Zerg’s projectiles and taking his battery away. It would be funny but it wouldn’t help Rex’s Video game arc.

I'm still shocked of how they managed to re-worked an entire movie for 9 months, and becoming one of the greatest movies and sequels ever made.

I've read the script for this version before. You didn't mention that S.C. and the Prospector convince Woody that being a collectible is a good thing by showing him how much he is worth via a toy catalogue. Then, when Woody is trying to retrieve his hat on the flagpole, they threaten to leave him if he doesn't get it because he is worth a lot less without it which makes him see how little they care about him.

I still can't help but feel bad for slinky. It's a classic tale of someone who is a trustworthy friend up to the point that someone who's more like their friend in every way, and has to just quietly slip into the background.

Most of the changes they made seem to be for the better, but the scene at 12:23 with Woody throwing Roundup Gang collectibles at Al to slow him is good stuff. It’s a very poetic way of showing Woody’s character growth

I'm glad Toy Story 2 finally broke the mandatory Disney policy to make sequels only direct to video, even as a young kid I found it disappointing that movies like Aladdin, Lion King and Pocahontas were cinematic impressive movies only to be downgraded to low quality and basic story sequels that were just pilot for tv series. Sure the direct to video sequels continue, at least for their animated movies, but glad Disney let Pixar and the new CGI movies get some better treatment by having their sequels go to theaters and hence keep the better production and more develop stories.

If it haven't been for Toy Story 2 forcing Disney to make it for theaters, I think the recent sequels like Frozen 2 and Ralph Breaks the internet would had end up as cheap low CGI straight to dvd sequels and Disney would had been fine as long as they were making money on the name.

The climax with them driving Al's car sounds very similar to Toy Story 4. Very interesting.

Really interesting, I'm glad we didn't end up with this version though. I wish the scrapped version of Toy Story 3 had been used for Toy Story 4 though.

This movie went from a potential “not as good as the first, and Woody is an annoying main character now” to “potential best sequel ever, and Woody is such a loyal main character with solid principles”.

I appreciate the musical choices in this. The music at 6:30 when it shows Al repairing Woody is the same tune as Toy Story 2, when the antique restoration guy is fixing Woody. You didn't have to pay this much attention to detail, but you did anyway.

This draft was a great start, but they really polished and worked this material into a much better story with more heart and excitement than their original concept. Plus, everything that went on behind-the-scenes of TS2 make the whole "Toy Story 2 was almost completely, and accidently, deleted" truth that much harder to wrap your head around.
I recommend to any of the viewers here to try looking that one up, if you're not familiar with how they almost torpedoed the entire finished product and it was somehow saved by a computer miracle...

This version actually doesn’t sound that bad though I think the version that we did get was much better

This is just proof that _every_ script can be improved with _multiple_ drafts.

Listening to the original full story I’m actually really surprised at how many ideas/concepts actually made it into the final product but I’m glad that they redid the story and the movie into what it is today. Also would you consider doing the Toy Story 3 direct to video sequel? As there were 2 ideas for the 3rd film which were the well known Buzz shipped to Taiwan story and also a version with it being like a murder mystery in Andy’s Grandma’s attic written by the creators of Teacher’s Pet.

“Lou’s Thigh Burn”
“The Museum of Fifty’s Objects, or as they call it, M.O.F.O.”

Fascinating video. One other thing I've read about the plot is with regard to Woody's Roundup. Lasseter and others have said it was inspired by several 1940s/50s western franchises, but from looking at a few myself, one stands out as matching elements of Woody's gang almost perfectly: Roy Rogers. In his show and films before it, Roy often worked as a cowboy private investigator and on at least one occasion even serves as interim sheriff (kind of like Woody). Bullseye's equivalent in the franchise is Trigger and was billed as "the smartest horse in the movies" (remember the song line "Bullseye, he's a smart one"?). Prospector's form appears to be inspired by Gabby Hayes, Roy Rogers' sidekick in his earlier stuff. As for Jessie, she's clearly a character with multiple influences, but Roy's cowgirl wife Dale Evans may have been inspiration for her (though she and Woody are more like siblings). Roy was insanely popular with kids of the era, possibly second only to Superman. Roy Rogers actually died while Toy Story 2 was being made, so perhaps this was a tribute to him. If anyone's interested, some of the Roy Rogers films and episodes are actually here on YouTube!

I like how bullseye was Jessie’s role in the original

I would've laughed all day if I saw that in this version of the movie! I can imagine Al freaking out while the kids laugh at him if that was animated!
