The TTL value (Time to Live) is a value found in IP packets that helps prevent network loops. When a packet is sent from a device, the TTL value is set and as the packet is routed through various routers, the TTL value is decremented. If the TTL value reaches zero, the packet is discarded. This helps prevent the packet from endlessly looping through routers and consuming network resources.
The TTL value is not found in Ethernet frames or Layer Two packets because Ethernet devices only understand Layer Two frames, not IP packets. This lack of TTL value in Ethernet frames led to the development of the spanning tree protocol, which helps prevent network loops by blocking one port when there are multiple links.
In summary, the TTL value is important in IP packets to avoid network loops, while Ethernet frames do not have TTL values, leading to the need for the spanning tree protocol to prevent network loops in Ethernet networks.
