This is a cool little tool and I’m sure it come in handy in the upcoming holiday season. It’s also a great gift idea for anyone who’s into arts and crafts. Let me know if there’s anything else in the Ryobi USB lithium battery line that you’d like me to take a look at.

There's nothin' wrong with Ryobi tools. Like him, I've been using them since the days when they were made in Japan and colored blue.
These tools are still great value for dollar and actually work too!

Thanks for the video! Really neat tool. As a DIYer/homeowner I use a lot of Ryobi stuff and their stuff has always worked great and held up for me.

I have the HF version for upholstery work. Its nice because you can use it against a straight edge and it will cut through the heaviest fabric or headliner.

I've had mine for a couple years. I use it basically for the same stuff you plan on using it for - mostly boxes. My battery doesn't have the self tester on it, but ... i don't care. I do love the thing though. It is a bit slow cutting stuff, and I could cut cardboard faster with a knife, but this requires almost no effort and I think this is where it shines. If you're breaking down a whole Christmas worth of boxes, using a knife doing that can get pretty old. Using this tool, it still takes forever, but I don't have to apply any force and that saves my arms.

I think it's a pretty great thing.

I’ve had mine for about a decade. They came from the fabric world first and grew up from there. It was invaluable for years at Christmas, but for the past 3 years not one gift has come in a blister pack. Packaging has gotten much more friendly. There are still plenty of the blister style packages out there, I just haven’t been cursed with them for a while now for some reason. Great tool to have around though.

I have to confess, I thought this was kind of a frivolous luxury, but after your demonstration, I can actually see how useful this little tool might be. Thx

Seems like a fun tool. A little loud, but not a show stopper.
Thank you for making this.

I used to really like Ryobi back in the blue days. They were really solid bang for the buck and dependable.

Ive never had a good experience since they turned green. TTI bought them (Milwaukee and Rigid as well) and started using one design and priced at each price point.

But to make good quality but cheap tools, you have to design it from the start with that in mind to make sure money is spent where it matters and I just haven't found that to be the case.

Though I haven't tried many of the Ryobi only tools.

I have the Ryobi 4.something cordless screwgun and it absolutely is a great tool. As long as we all understand that its for assembling things, not driving tap cons or other industrial uses. It lives in the kitchen drawer and gets frequent use rather than going out to the van to get the Makita or Milwaukee to build an IKEA bookcase. This cutter looks like a buy!

My wife has enjoyed her ryobi usb lithium battery tools. A definite recommend for around the house. And craft projects

I kid but the cutter would be helpful for opening the package. That being said, my favorite trick for those clam shell style packages is to use a razor blade that has a good point on it, then drag it around the entire perimeter of the package (usually there is a fold that will guide your blade). You don't need to push hard or go all the way through, just enough to separate one of the layers from the plastic welds. After that the entire package should open relatively easily like a book.

Makita and Bosch had 12v versions of this tool for a few years before Ryobi made theirs, but I think Ryobi had the best execution.

The Bosch one (GUS 12V-300) had a on-off switch rather than a trigger, and the trigger on the Makita one (PC01R3 or CP100D) didn't extend down the grip. Also, they looked to be a lot more bulky and heavy with their 12v batteries compared to this little guy. After being torn between buying one of the former two, I ended up getting the Ryobi once it launched. It helped that the Ryobi was dirt cheap compared to the others, and included a battery for that price.

Protip: it's the FVC51K if you're a Yankee, and the RCT4-120 if you're not.

Thanks for the review. Perhaps the famous "Nubs McGilicutty" should pick one of these up.

Thanks for the review. I must be living under a rock, never saw this tool before. I moved from a Home Depot neighborhood to a Lowes. I need to get out more.

I got this for breaking down boxes, it sucks for that. It is great for packaging, especially for my wife that is afraid to use a razor. I did use it to cut carpeting and it made a nice clean cut and made it easy to get a straight cut too.

All the power tools I've bought in the last 6 years are Ryobi. Good solid tools for a homeowner who is slightly handy. And they all use the same battery.
I have no problem with the batteries dying, and they hold their charge for months in my garage.
For me, they are perfect because i hire licensed and bonded professionals for the big projects.
