SpaceX just Redesigned Starship after first orbital flight explosion!

SpaceX never minds changing!
Four minutes into the first orbital launch of the giant SpaceX Starship, the unmanned rocket blew up at an altitude of 18 miles.
We all know the 390-foot-tall launch vehicle, the largest and most powerful anyone has ever attempted to launch into space, has long been a lynchpin of Elon Musk’s ambitions to someday colonize Mars, and its failure interrupted what had been a remarkable string of successes for SpaceX.
But that's just the beginning. The dedicated SpaceX team promptly undertakes a redesign of Starship, propelling us toward an even brighter future.

Starship hasn't failed because it's flying before it's fully developed. No human is going to be launching from the ground in it for many years anyway, they will be taken to space on other rockets like the SLS.

As for the potential hot-staging, does it make any sense to blast the first stage with searing rocket exhaust when the intention is to reuse it many, many times rather than throw it away after a single use like with those other rockets? If there will be hot-staging, it will be used for emergencies only, for a faster escape. It just doesn't make sense for normal use.

My only critique: the yardstick of success for the starship landing flights (i.e duration of problem vs. duration of flight) shows that jumping out of a plane with no parachute is largely a success as it is only the last 0.1 seconds that has the problem vs. the time in free fall. Not really a valid evaluator. The discussion on the hot staging system though was fascinating, and I learned why the Russian rockets had that latticework built in. I hadn't know that.

“slows the rocket to just 100 to 200 miles an hour or 50 to 100 miles a second” 🧐🧐

It IS great to see that the SpaceX team has shown strong, adaptive approaches to engineering problems. My experience with quite-significant problem-solutions, this late in the development, working as planned has led me to feel cautious about getting everything fixed with “the next move”. I like their confidence. I hope that their solution(s) get them where-the-project-needs-to-be before money issues creep in. Good luck!

I love when you guys get back on the subject of SpaceX. 👍

Seems like a good guess that the new cutouts could be for hot staging for an abort of the upper stage.

It blew up because they hit the big red button that blows stuff up. They had to hit the self destruct mechanism, after the rocket tumbled end over end 6 frikin times. It hung together for 6 complete end over end loops, they hit the self destruct button it blew 2 huge holes in the sides of the fuel tanks, and still no explosion. Then a few tense seconds later it exploded. A self inflicted explosion, lets give Elon some well deserved credit. It didn't blow up, he blew it up. You are mis guided, for sure.

Starship’s hot staging reminds me more of Titan missiles (below the interstage is a gap meant for hotstaging)

Ive been watching you for years, but this was your best written and produced segment yet. Good for you, and keep refining !

"First sub-orbital flight termination." Yes, they used explosives to terminate the flight, but the rocket didn't explode.

STOP SAYING THE ROCKET "BLEW UP". The FTS was activated on purpose.

How does the autogenous pressurization prevent the need for hot staging or fuel settling? I don't think the engines would like getting a gaseous form of methane or oxygen pumped through them either.

Another very informative episode! Thanks!

A Launch abort systems makes very little sense considering modern launch abort systems launch the crew capsule away from the 1st and 2nd stage, with starship the crew will still be strapped to a huge amount of propellant in the ship which I think wouldn’t have sufficient power to escape any explosions from the super heavy

Is there a possibility of a crew module, smaller than Starship, that could separate and abort? Would that improve safety? If so, how? The first few Space Shuttles had ejection seats.

It makes sense for SpaceX to change the design of the interstage now because it probably needs to be strengthened anyway, based on what was seen in the first test flight (looks like it crumpled and shortened a little, perhaps during max q, although it still held up, otherwise), and because it's inevitable, as Elon might say, for use in a launch escape scenario. But I think it's highly unlikely that hot-staging will be the normal mode of operation because of the damage it would do to the Super Heavy first stage. That's OK for expendable rockets, but not so much for the Starship system.

Great SpaceX Starship needs redesign. First to recognize Starship is an unstable standing structure, if trying land on any gravity field. Second to understand Starsihip can not relaunch without reducing the size.

I am glad that SpaceX may be thinking of abort modes, but since the Starship itself is actually the SECOND STAGE OF THE ROCKET in addition to being the passenger compartment, there is simply going to be some very significant risk. I respectfully submit the evidence of the 2 second stage explosions of Falcon 9. One was on the pad, and the other was during initial ascent. Both were due to unforeseen design or manufacturing errors that had escaped the testing process.
I would feel a whole lot better with little escape capsules like they had on the B-58 Hustler Bomber, which were rated for escape at Mach 2. No telling how much weight that would add to the vehicle though. It may just be that passengers will have to sign a liability waiver just like they do for bungee jumping or paragliding.

Anyone else having issues with playback on ALPHA TECH videos pausing and audio skipping? I can play any other YouTube video start to finish without issues...it's just ALPHA TECH videos that are exhibiting problems.
