I can't imagine how he felt or his family. These men and women are so brave to put themselves in harms way to protect our nation. Hats off to you all.

My wife and I served together in Afghanistan. My unit had just comeback after a raid on a compound we conducted in Kandahar looking for a suicide vest making cell. As soon as we returned my wife’s unit pushed out to Gov center on a state department escort run. I didn’t have time to say goodbye, or kiss her and tell her I loved her. As soon as her unit arrived a huge mob started to gather outside of gov center in a protest against coalition forces because of an accidental shooting. I remember watching the drone feed from the Toc, I started to get a bad feeling in my stomach, I never took my gear off. As the crowd grew I began petitioning my command to let me take a Quick reaction force to reinforce my wife unit now trapped inside government center. I felt helpless, looking for my wife on the drone feed and pleading my case to let me go. My platoon sergeant finally told me to just spin up and take 3 trucks volunteers only. Before I could leave to assemble my team a suicide vest detonated near the front gate. The absolute terror I felt in that moment, I didn’t know what to do, I wanted to get there immediately in case there was a follow on attack but I couldn’t stop watching the drone feed looking for my wife. We finally got the call that she was ok and everyone else. My wife was a medic and I remember the relief I felt when the drone finally showed her setting up a casualty collection point far inside the compound and safe. I could tell it was her just by the way she walked and by her hair because she had removed her IcH to better treat the wounded. A man in love knows his woman from miles away. The whole toc started to cheer and pat me on the shoulder and hug me when I yelled “there she is!!!” We both made it home that deployment. We have a beautiful daughter, she’s a nurse and I graduated from a prestigious private media school where I hope to pursue a career in entertainment, I.E podcasting lmao. Im in love with my wife just as much as the first day I met her, everyone called her combat Barbie because she was that gorgeous and she picked my sorry burnout behind because in her words I looked hot in my kit rocking my tab, my SF combat patch and the jump wings in our pog special troops battalion from Colorado lol. I’m sorry for your loss brother, I can only imagine, my heart breaks for you brother…..

I remember reading a story on reddit. A female Marine was dating her counterpart in secret. While deployed in Afghanistan, they were both out on patrol. He was blown up by a little girl handing him a flower. She had to pick up the pieces while holding back tears and not tell anyone about the relationship.
